The Agricultural Company Barnstädt e. G. (registered cooperative society) is located in the area Saalekreis and cultivated around 5,900 hectares of agricultural land in 2012. It is a mixed farm with the following areas of activity: crops (wheat, barley, rape seed, pea, sugar beet, maize), dairy production, livestock production (pig, cattle, sheep) as well as freight forwarding. Altogether, the agricultural company has 172 employees and 12 apprentices and therefore has considerable importance as the largest employer in the region. It is also essential for the support of various associations (sports, fanfare band, carnival) and the voluntary fire brigade.

Analysis of the potential and organizational competences of agricultural operating systems

The Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) focuses on the analysis of economic, social and political process of change in the agricultural and food economy as well as in rural areas. Its study area includes the transition countries of middle, eastern and south-eastern Europe as well as central and eastern Asia. In the face of a rising demand for food of a growing world population and different development paths, a central topic of the research activity focuses on how sustainable rural and agricultural development can be supported in the agricultural sector of the investigated region. As an agricultural economics institute IAMO is focusing on basic and applied research and employs about 115 staff members.

ZSH

Exemplary establishment, transfer of experience in agriculture in Saxony-Anhalt, project coordination

The ZSH, an associated institute at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg founded in 1995, focuses on basic as well as applied research in the fields of labour market structures and employment patterns, personnel policy, vocational training and individual entrances to work and employment. Of particular importance is the development of East Germany, taking the demographic turbulences into account. A team of about 20 social scientists works on varying projects, whose results have influence on scientific discussions and allows the knowledge transfer for companies and politics.
